Teaching Phonics

 A half day workshop for Primary Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants

Course Aims:

  • Are you new to teaching phonics?
  • Are you changing Key Stage?
  • Would you like to develop your phonics subject knowledge and teaching?
  • Are you unsure of how to record what children have learned in phonics?

This half day course aims to provide Primary Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants with the knowledge and the confidence to teach phonics and have a clear impact on outcomes for children.

Modules include:

  • What is phonics and why do we need to teach it? Including phonics screening.
  • Demystifying the jargon – what are graphemes, phonemes and phonological awareness?
  • Ideas for teaching segmenting and blending.
  • A 15 minute multisensory phonics session, including recording and sharing with the class teacher.
  • Practical activities, games and resources for teaching phonics.
  • Creating a ‘box of tricks’ and Q & A.
